Trojans slip past Tigers with walk off home run win

VILLE PLATTE -- In dramatic fashion, the Sacred Heart Trojans came away with a 2-1 win over the Oberlin Tigers on a lead off solo home run from JT Harper in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Sacred Heart starting pitcher, Christian Duplechin, did the rest on the hill, as he threw an ever efficient 72 pitch one hit complete game.
The contest was part of the Eunice High Tournament taking place over the weekend. Because of the number of teams participating in the tournament, Sacred Heart was designated as a host sight.
The Trojans were scheduled to play Ouachita Christian and St. Michael’s on Satuday. The Gazette will recap those games in Thursday’s edition. With the win, the Trojans improve to 7-2-1 on the year.
“Christian pitched a gem for us on the mound today,” stated Sacred Heart head coach Gary Ashworth. “He was throwing three pitches for strikes out there on the mound. It was crazy for us at the plate. I mean we hit it hard, but everything was right at them. But, you have to give to them, they made the plays. One thing I have learned about our team this year is that we will scrap it out with anybody we face.’
Sacred Heart got on the board first. After stranding a lone Oberlin runner in the top of the first, the Trojans put up a single run in the bottom half of the inning. Harper led off with a single to left field and reached second base on a steal.
Wesley Launey followed with a double down the left field line, plating Harper. Sacred Heart was not able to plate Launey, picking up three outs in a row on two fly balls and a ground out to the short stop.
The Tigers got their lead off batter on board with an error by the Trojan defense. However, Duplechin was able to strike out the next batter and induce ground balls to the next two Oberlin batters, shutting down the Tiger offense.
In the bottom of the second, Sacred Heart put a runner on board, when Dru Scully drew a two out walk. Scully was then put out at second base on a fielder’s choice, killing any Trojan momentum.
Oberlin tied the game up in the top of the third inning. The lead off hitter for the Tigers grounded out to Duplechin to record the first out of the at bat. Duplechin then proceeded to hit the next Tiger batter, giving Oberlin some life. An error moved runners to first and third and a fielder’s choice gave the Tigers their only run of the game.
Sacred Heart threatened again in the bottom of the third and again in the bottom of the fifth. In the third inning, the Trojans had runners at second and third with two outs, but could not push the runs across. In the fifth, Sacred Heart found themselves with runners at first and third with one out, and still could not plate the winning run.
Oberlin was able to get runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but was shut down by Duplechin and the Trojan defense.
