Mamou unable to get offense going; fall to Iota to end post-season aspirations
MAMOU – The Mamou Demons quest for a slot in the 2019 LHSAA Class 3A playoffs came to an end Friday night as they dropped their final regular season game in a 20-0 loss to the Iota Bulldogs.
With the loss, Mamou falls to 4-6 on the season and 2-3 in district play.
On the night, Mamou totaled 203 yards of offense with 144 of those yards coming on the ground. The Demons committed 17 penalties for 134 yards and turned the ball over three times; twice on fumbles and once on an interception.
Iota picked up 13 first downs and converted seven of 16 third downs. In contrast, Mamou picked up only seven total first downs and was three of 19 on third down conversions.
The night started with neither team being able to gain an advantage. Both the Bulldogs and the Demons would wind up scoreless after the first quarter of play.
However, Iota got their offense going in the second quarter, scoring two of their three touchdowns on the night.
The first score of the game came at the start of the second frame. With 11:39 left in the period, quarterback Dawson Wallace hit Tyrone Charlot on a four yard strike to give the Bulldogs an early lead. The extra point was blocked but Iota led 6-0.
Mid-way through the second quarter, Iota was on the move once again. At the 6:19 mark, Charlot took a jet sweep and outraced the Mamou defense for the two-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good off of the foot of Luis Doroteo and the Bulldogs took a 13-0 lead into the locker room.
With Mamou unable to get things going offensively, Iota took advantage and used their field position to pick up the final touchdown of the night. Mid-way through the third quarter, Wallace called his own number on the draw play and sprinted 52 yards for the score.
The point after was good from Doroteo, extending the Bulldog lead to 20-0 where it was stay for the remainder of the game.
Daylon Ardoin finished the night with 61 yards on seven carries to lead Mamou’s ground game. Jalon Bradley added another 53 yards on 13 rushing attempts.
Ardoin also completed six of 18 passing attempts for 59 yards. Payton Vidrine led all Demon receivers with two catches for 37 yards.
